San Diego Roundup : Gillespie Field to Feature Off-Road Racing Saturday

Off-road racing moves Saturday from Cajon Speedway to Gillespie Field.

The racers will use the entire inner portion of the concrete track, which will have an added 3,000 yards of dirt. Racers in six classifications of vehicles will compete, including 1600cc closed-course points leader Tommy Croft of San Diego.

The Major League Scouting Bureau will conduct a tryout camp Saturday at Southwestern College in Chula Vista. Registration will begin at 9 a.m.

Players must be between 16 and 25, and furnish their own gloves and shoes.

The San Diego Chapter of the Professional Golfers Assn. is sponsoring eight free golf clinics for children 10 and under Saturday.

The clinics will be from 2-4 p.m. at Torrey Pines Golf Course, Stardust Country Club, Singing Hills Country Club, Rancho Carlsbad, Oaks North, Lawrence Welk Resort Village, Chula Vista Golf Course and Carlton Oaks Country Club.

More than 70 traditional sailboats, all of ancient vintage or classic design, will race a 12-mile course Saturday in the 12th annual Yesteryear Regatta in San Diego Bay.

The course will begin and end opposite the Reuben E. Lee restaurant, wind along Harbor Island, Shelter Island, out to the channel and back.

The eighth annual Rancho Bernardo 10-kilometer and 2-mile fun run will be at 7 a.m. Sunday. Both races will start at the Rancho Bernardo Town Center.

The fee is $10 with shirt, $8 without shirt and $100 for corporate running teams. Add $2 for race-day registration.

The San Diego Bicycle Club has two races scheduled this weekend.

Saturday, the Balboa Park Criterium will be on the 0.7-mile loop on Balboa and Juniper drives in the southwest corner of Balboa Park. Sunday, bikers will ride a 10-kilometer course in Tijuana.

The San Diego Nomads, in fourth place of the Western Soccer Alliance, play host to F.C. Seattle Storm (1-3-0) at 7 p.m. Saturday at Glenn Broderick Field at San Diego High. Tickets are $2 for adults and $1 for children.
