Viewpoint / Letters : The Nixon-Magic Ticket Was a Tough One to Beat
Regarding Magic Johnson’s ball-hogging (Viewpoint, June 14), the Lakers’ predictability is a product of coaching strategy. Not long ago, the Lakers had two starting guards who could run a fast break. Once the outlet pass was made, if the defense kept Magic from getting upcourt, Norm Nixon was gone, and vice versa. With Nixon traded, the Lakers became easier to stop. Slow down Magic and you kill the break.
The Celtics, on the other hand, have two off-guards sharing the ball-handling duties, but their strength is their front line.
Magic is the best guard playing today, the best passer ever. He is also the most worn-out guard by the end of the regular season.
