The Ventura County Gulls made six errors in their first three games of the California League’s second half, and Manager Glenn Ezell responded by calling for extra running drills after Thursday’s loss to the Visalia Oaks.

Maybe Ezell should count his blessings instead of laps. Greg Mahlberg, manager of the Salinas Spurs, has watched his team commit 15 errors this week, including two in Friday’s 8-1 loss to the Gulls at Ventura College.

“I don’t know what they’ve been thinking about,” said Mahlberg, whose team tied for first place in the league’s Northern Division during the first half. “You can’t make that many physical errors and expect to win.”

One of those errors, a wild throw by left fielder Renard Brown on a base hit by Santiago Garcia in the seventh inning, allowed Eric Yelding to score from second base, giving Ventura County a 3-1 lead.

The Gulls went on to score five more times in the inning on run-scoring singles by Jim Bishop, Domingo Martinez and Mike Jones and a two-run double by Greg Myers.

Geronimo Berroa had broken a 1-1 tie in the sixth with his 11th home run of the season.

The Gulls received a solid performance from Elvis Ciprian (1-1), who joined the Gulls on Sunday.
