A 24-year-old man from Phoenix was found shot to death Saturday morning outside his car, which was stopped along a busy road in Moorpark, the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department reported.

The man, Candelario Viscarra, was found in the 7000 block of Walnut Canyon Road shortly after 5 a.m. by Ventura County firefighters, who were returning from an unrelated incident, Lt. Guy Inglis said. Viscarra had been shot once in the heart, a spokesman for the county coroner’s office said.

The victim’s car, with the lights on and the driver’s door open, was parked in the southbound slow lane, Inglis said. The body was found in a dirt patch about 40 feet from the car, he said.

Police have not determined a motive for the killing. Homicide investigators could not be reached for comment Saturday.

Viscarra’s wife said she last talked to her husband about 8 p.m. Friday by telephone, and “he seemed fine.” She said Viscarra came to Southern California about two weeks ago looking for work. He was employed in Ventura County as a migrant worker, she said.
