U.S. Water Polo Team Ties Spain, 8-8, Finishes 2nd in 6-Nation Tournament

The U.S. water polo team tied Spain, 8-8, Sunday in the final game of the Six Nations Tournament at Seville, Spain, but finished second to Spain in the final standings on overall goal differential.

Doug Burke scored four goals for the United States (4-0-1), including the goal that gave the Americans an 8-7 lead late in the fourth quarter. But Spain (4-0-1) scored with 1 minute, 55 seconds left to play to tie the game and win the round-robin tournament.

James Bergeson scored two goals for the United States, with Kevin Robertson and Jody Campbell each scoring one.

Mike Evans was ejected from the game for brutality, but Spain, too, had a player ejected for brutality and the fourth quarter was played five-on-five.

In other final-round games, Yugoslavia beat France, 13-11, and Greece beat Canada, 7-6.

The U.S. team will go on to Moscow to begin competition in the Goodwill Games Wednesday against Holland.
