Orange County Roundup : Fullerton Coach Dan Lewis Leads Three Summer Wrestling Camps

Cal State Fullerton wrestling Coach Dan Lewis will direct three wrestling camps this summer in Titan Gym.

Lewis will be assisted by former two-time NCAA champion Joe Gonzales, 1983 Pan American Games silver medalist Paul Lablanc, national AAU All-American J. D. Hawkins, two-time All-American Mike Elliott and graduate assistants Daryl Arroyo and Daren Linsey.

The camps are designed to increase knowledge in all areas of wrestling, including throwing, leg attacks, mat wrestling and pinning combinations. Weight training and running techniques also will be included.

Titan Youth Wrestling Camp, for ages 9 to 15 with two years of experience or less, will run July 28-Aug. 1.Registration is from 7 to 9 a.m. on July 28 at Pacific Christian College’s admission office.

Two Titan Wrestling Camps, for ages 10 to 18, will be held Aug. 3-8 and Aug. 10-15. Check-in is from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Aug. 3 and Aug. 10 at PCC’s admission office.

Sign-up fee for each camp is $110 for commuters and $150 for live-in campers.

Southern California Over-The-Line is accepting men’s and women’s teams for the Saddleback Valley Summer Grass Tournament at El Toro Community Park at 9 a.m. Saturday.

Sam Ermolenko, a co-favorite with defending champion Erik Gundersen of Denmark to win the 1986 world speedway motorcycle championship, returns from the British Speedway League to race on Coors Western Night at 8 tonight at the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa.

Ermolenko recently won the Overseas Final in Coventry, England, and will compete in the next qualifying round for the world title, the InterContinental Final, July 20 in Bradford, England.

Fans purchasing tickets for tonight’s race will gain free admission to the Orange County Fair. Ticket booths open at noon for the fair.

The speedway riders will be competing in an all-scratch racing format for the Fair Derby, a bronzed derby hat once owned by former star Sonny Nutter. Robert Pfetzing of Garden Grove is the defending derby champion.

The South Coast Metros’ Anteater Baseball Camp will be in two sessions, July 14-18 and July 21-25, at UC Irvine. Mike Gerakos, UCI baseball coach, will supervise a staff of college coaches and former professional players.

The camp, for players 8 and older, costs $175. However, in accordance with the NCAA, a student who is eligible for admission to college in the fall of 1986 or who has started classes for his senior year in high school will not be permitted to attend the camp.

The camp will emphasize fundamentals. Videotapes will be utilized. Campers also will get individual batting instruction. Games will be played daily at the camp, which will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Each camper will receive a T-shirt, individual evaluation, soft drinks during lunch and break time and will be eligible for daily awards.

The fifth annual Orange Coast College volleyball camp for girls is taking applicants for its three-day camp in August.

Registration for the camp, which runs Aug. 1-3, is $50. Camp will be from 8 a.m to 4:30 p.m.

The camp will be directed by OCC women’s volleyball Coach Jane Hilgendorf. She has coached at OCC for 14 years, leading the Pirates to three state championships and five of the past eight South Coast Conference titles.

OCC also will offer its first soccer camp for girls and women 12-20 on Aug. 8-10. The camp, which costs $50, will be coached by OCC soccer Coach Barbara Bond and Edison High School Coach Renee Nadon.

The Orange County Trojan Club will be host to the USC football kickoff banquet at the Irvine Marriott Hotel July 24. The $32.50-a-plate dinner is a fund-raiser for the local Trojan Club, which provides scholarship assistance to the USC men’s and women’s athletic programs.

The dinner, emceed by radio personality Bud Furillo, will honor football Coach Ted Tollner and his staff.

The Olive Crest Treatment Center for sexually and emotional abused children is holding a golf tournament at Huntington Beach Seacliff Country Club on Monday to benefit the center.
