A power outage in Miramar left 13,000 San Diego Gas & Electric customers in the dark Friday morning, a spokeswoman for SDG&E; said.

All the customers served by the substation in the 8800 block of Miramar Road were without power when the circuits at the substation closed about 9:30 a.m. Power was restored at 10 a.m. for 80% of the customers, said Karen Duncan, a SDG&E; spokeswoman. The remaining customers had electricity by 11 a.m.

“The cause of the outage is under investigation,” said Duncan. “There were reports of an explosion close to the substation. But all the circuits closing could have produced the loud noise.”

Area businesses were without power, but the Miramar Naval Air Station has its own auxiliary power and was not affected.

“The power caused our rotary phone system to go down,” said Dennis Larson, owner of Central Towing and Road Service. “That’s our lifeline. We lost a few customers, but luckily I have a private line in my office.”

Wanda Lundy from Deposition Technology said the blackout also shut down phone service at that manufacturing company.

“Since we could not help customers, a lot of people went home,” Lundy said.
