Desert Region Rattled by 4.0 Aftershock
An earthquake measuring 4.0 on the Richter scale shook the California desert Friday night, but few people reported feeling the temblor, an aftershock of the much larger quake that hit the area Tuesday.
“I think we’ve only gotten one call,” Palm Springs police dispatcher Milly Salo said after the 10:45 p.m. shaker. “I think that the residents are getting pretty laid back about this.”
The aftershock occurred 12 miles northwest of Palm Springs, said Dennis Meredith of the California Institute of Technology, in the same spot as a quake with a Richter reading of 5.9 that struck at 2:21 a.m. Tuesday.
The earlier quake did an estimated $5.75 million damage and injured 40 people, most of them slightly, according to the Riverside County Emergency Services Office. Eight people remain hospitalized.
More than 50 aftershocks have registered 3.0 or higher on the Richter scale, Meredith said.
