Navratilova Is an American, Too
Mike Downey’s Wimbledon story of July 4, in referring to Chris Evert Lloyd, called her “Wimbledon’s last American-born contender.” In referring to Martina Navratilova, he called her the “ex-Czech.” They are both Americans--no hyphen needed. I find distinguishing native-born Americans from naturalized Americans inappropriate at any time, but on July 4 during the celebration of Liberty Weekend, I find it appalling.
Mr. Downey, unless we are an American Indian, we are all immigrants or descendants of immigrants. I am proud of the great American tennis champion, Martina Navratilova.
