Hundreds of firefighters battled 85 wildfires ranging over more than 300,000 acres of brush and forest in Alaska, most of them started by lightning. Many fires are allowed to burn themselves out because it is too costly to fight them, according to the U.S. Bureau of Land Management and the state Division of Forestry. Since the first of the year, 680 fires have scorched more than 440,000 acres of Alaska forests.
