The City of San Diego’s new main library should be located in Hillcrest on the old Sears site, a nine-member ad hoc task force has suggested.

The task force, established in February by Councilman Ed Struiksma while he was acting mayor, has issued a report that rated the 12.2-acre parcel at 1290 Cleveland Ave. as the most desirable library location because it has public support, has plenty of free parking and is near streets, freeways and public transportation.

Of the six alternatives ranked by the task force, the second was expanding the current downtown library building; last was the Community Concourse adjacent to City Hall.
