OLD GLOBE’S WINTER WILL TOUT DEBUTS

The world premiere of A.R. Gurney’s “Another Antigone” and the American premiere of Alan Ayckbourn’s “Intimate Exchanges” will highlight the Old Globe Theatre’s winter season, theater artistic director Jack O’Brien announced Tuesday.

Gurney’s “dark comedy” about conflicts between a university student and her classics professor will open the season Nov. 29 on the Cassius Carter Centre Stage. Gurney, whose “The Dining Room” was staged at the Carter in 1983, will be in residence. The play will run through Jan. 11.

Lyle Kessler’s “Orphans,” a psychological drama, will be the second play at the Carter, running Jan. 24 to March 8.

The Carter season will close with the San Diego premiere of “Marry Me a Little,” a musical revue of outtakes from various Stephen Sondheim musicals. “Marry,” conceived by Craig Lucas and Norman Rene, will play from March 21 to May 3.

The season will begin on the larger Globe stage with “Intimate Exchanges.” Two actors will play 10 roles in Ayckbourn’s domestic comedy, which runs Dec. 4 through Jan. 11.

Steven Metcalfe’s play, “The Incredibly Famous Willy Rivers,” about a rock star attempting a comeback, makes its West Coast debut Jan. 29 through March 8.

O’Brien said the Globe is considering Peter Parnell’s “Romance Language” as the final play of the winter season, March 26 through May 3. But he said the managers are waiting to see Parnell’s revision of the historic American fantasy, which was dropped by the Globe in March following its Los Angeles run. At that time, O’Brien said the play needed a stronger framework.

O’Brien said he still has “an ongoing commitment to ‘Romance Language,’ ” but he said he is also looking at an American musical as the sixth play.
