The Riverside County Board of Supervisors declared a local emergency throughout the county as a result of a July 8 earthquake that rattled the Palm Springs area, injured at least 40 people and caused an estimated $5.8-million damage to homes, businesses, roads and bridges. The declaration was a first step toward obtaining national disaster loans to restore roads and bridges and Small Business Administration loans for damaged commercial and private residences, said Michael Burton, assistant director of the county’s emergency services division. “The declaration also frees up some county money to be used for restoration,” Burton said.
