2 Aftershocks Jolt Palm Springs Area

Share

The strongest aftershocks to hit the Palm Springs area since a 5.9 earthquake jolted Southern California on July 8 struck Thursday afternoon.

Measuring 4.6 and 4.4 on the Richter scale, the quakes hit at 1:36 p.m. and 2:55 p.m.

“Both were getting to the marginal point (in strength) where you could have damages,” said Bob Norris, a seismic analyst at Caltech’s Seismological Laboratory in Pasadena. Both aftershocks were centered in the sparsely populated desert region where the main quake struck last week, about 12 miles northwest of Palm Springs.

Norris said no damages were reported, apparently because of the scarcity of structures in the immediate vicinity.
