San Diego Roundup : Over-the-Line Championship Set for Sunday

The team of Chuck Cromar, Willie Matson and Kevin Murray will defend its men’s division championship this weekend in the 33rd World Championship Over-the-Line Tournament at Fiesta Island.

More than half of the 400 teams entered in the tournament, which began last weekend, have been eliminated. Starting time is 7 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. The final matches are scheduled for Sunday afternoon.

The ninth America’s Finest City Half Marathon will begin at 7 a.m. Aug. 24. Runners are encouraged to register early because the race is limited to 6,000 entrants. It will begin at Cabrillo National Monument, follow San Diego Bay and end at Balboa Park.

Entry fee is $14 before Aug. 1, $20 Aug. 1 and after. Entry forms are available at the American Lung Assn. office, at 3861 Front Street, or at any Square Pan Pizza store.

Mail entries must be received before Aug. 15 with a self-addressed, stamped envelope.

Runners also may register at the Sheraton Harbor Island East from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Aug. 22, and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Aug. 23.

The 57th San Diego County Open golf tournament will be Aug. 2-4 at the Cottonwood Golf Club in El Cajon.

The event has its largest purse--more than $32,500--for a field of about 130 pros and 50 amateur players. Past champions expected to compete include Mike Wydra (1980), Dave Emerick (‘81), Mark Wiebe (‘82), Barry Mahlberg (‘84) and Ted Lehman (‘85). The winning pro will receive $5,400 while the 12 low amateur finishers will collect merchandise gifts, equaling $2,500.

The fifth Jewish Community Center golf tournament will be July 27 at the Singing Hills Country Club. The $50 entry fee includes the greens fee, refreshments, the cart, dinner and prizes.

The San Diego Nomads, who are in a four-way tie for second place in the Western Soccer Alliance, play at the San Jose Earthquakes Saturday night.

The Nomads tied the first-place Hollywood Kickers, 0-0, last Saturday. That placed the Nomads, F.C. Seattle, F.C. Portland and the Earthquakes in a tie for second, all with 10 points. The Kickers have 16 points.
