San Diegan David Brin won a national award Saturday night for his science fiction novel, “The Postman,” besting authors Kurt Vonnegut, Greg Baer and British writer Keith Roberts for the John W. Campbell Award presented at the University of Kansas.
Brin became the 13th winner of the annual Campbell award with his novel about a post-nuclear holocaust world in which the accidental discovery of a postman’s uniform and mailbag leads to the rebuilding of civilization.
“The Postman,” Brin’s fourth novel, won out over Vonnegut’s “Galapagos,” Baer’s “Blood Music” and Roberts’ “Kiteworld” for the award.
Brin, who has taught physics and writing, previously won the Nebula and Hugo awards for his third novel, “Startide Rising,” published in 1983.
