Baby Killed in Fall From Car; Father Held

A 14-month-old boy died Saturday night after he fell from a car when his father lost control of it on a freeway in National City.

Edward C. White, 31, of San Diego, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, said California Highway Patrol spokesman Bill McDaniel.

His son, Ashley Michael White, died at Paradise Valley Hospital at 8 p.m. The accident occurred at 7:05 p.m. on the South Bay Freeway west of Interstate 805.

According to the CHP report, Edward White failed to see a directional sign, veered off the road and the car overturned. The child fell out, and the car rolled on top of him.

McDaniel said there was no evidence that the child had been wearing a seat belt or had been riding in a car seat, as is required by law.
