DOMINGO TO HEAD BENEFIT CONCERT FOR VICTIMS OF MEXICAN EARTHQUAKE
Tenor Placido Domingo will appear in a concert benefiting Mexican earthquake relief at 8 p.m. Aug. 12 at the Universal Amphitheatre. The concert is sponsored by Operation California, a Los Angeles-based relief agency.
“Placido Domingo and Friends” will include appearances by singers Julie Andrews and John Denver and by the New American Orchestra, conducted by Jack Elliott. During the concert, Armand Hammer will be honored on stage with a Human Achievement Award from Operation California.
All proceeds from the concert, according to a representative of Operation California, will benefit “the 50,000 homeless victims of the massive Mexico City earthquake.”
To date, the official said, Operation California has organized seven airlifts and one sea shipment to Mexico since the Sept. 19, 1985, quake, “amounting to $1.5 million in direct aid.” Funds raised from the concert will be used to build new shelters and health clinics. Tickets are priced at $250, $100, $50 and $25.
