University of California student groups that have been active in protests against South Africa’s apartheid policies called for the resignation of UC President David Gardner, who last week dissented from a decision by the university regents to divest the $3.1 billion in securities the university holds in companies with South African ties. “(Gardner) voted against divestment,” said Stacy Johnson of the UC Divestment Committee on theBerkeley campus. “He’s obviously not the person to implement the plan.” The regents, the governing board of the nine-campus UC system, voted 13-9 to approve the divestiture plan proposed by Gov. George Deukmejian.
