Kingman, Lansford Lead A’s to 4-2 Win Over the Red Sox

Dave Kingman lined a two-run single in the first inning and Carney Lansford followed with a run-scoring double, and three Oakland A’s pitchers combined to beat Tom Seaver and the Boston Red Sox, 4-2, Tuesday.

Oakland starter Joaquin Andujar, 6-2, yielded six hits, including Rich Gedman’s two-run homer in the fourth, in 7 innings. The right-hander, who walked one and struck out two, is 2-0 since coming off the disabled list last week.

A single, a wild pitch and a walk ended Andujar’s outing with one out in the eighth. Left-hander Dave Von Ohlen relieved Andujar, got Bill Buckner on a fly to center, and right-hander Steve Ontiveros came on to end the Boston threat by striking out Don Baylor.

Ontiveros went the rest of the way for his 10th save.

Seaver, 4-8, allowed six hits in 6 innings. He is 2-2 since being traded to Boston by the Chicago White Sox on June 29.

The A’s, striving to escape last place in the American League West, won for the seventh time in eight games. The Red Sox, leaders in the Eastern Division, suffered their sixth loss in seven games.

The A’s first-inning rally began when Seaver walked Dwayne Murphy with one out. After Jose Canseco popped out to shortstop, Bruce Bochte singled and Seaver threw a wild pitch which sent the runners to second and third.

Kingman singled to center for the first two runs, stole second and scored on Carney Lansford’s double to left.
