Padres Lose Fifth in Row to Cubs, 6-4

Jerry Mumphrey had two hits and scored twice and Leon Durham added a run-scoring double in a three-run seventh and also scored two runs to pace the Chicago Cubs to a 6-4 victory Tuesday over the San Diego Padres.

The loss was the Padres’ fifth straight, their longest losing streak of the season.

Mumphrey, who went 4 for 4 Monday, reached base his first three times up. He walked and scored in the first, reached on an infield single in the third and doubled and scored to key a two-run fifth inning.

Ed Lynch, 2-1, went the first seven-plus innings before giving way to Frank DiPino in the eighth. Lee Smith pitched the ninth for his 16th save.

Chicago jumped on loser Lance McCullers, 5-4, for a run in the first inning without getting a hit. Mumphrey led off with a walk, went to second on catcher Terry Kennedy’s passed ball, went to third on Ryne Sandberg’s ground out and scored on Gary Matthews’ ground out.

In the fifth, Mumphrey led off with a double to center and went to third on Sandberg’s infield single. Mumphrey scored when Matthews hit into a double play. Durham walked, stole second and Keith Moreland was intentionally walked before Jody Davis followed with a run-scoring single to left.

Chicago broke the game open with three runs in the seventh inning. Matthews reached on third baseman Graig Nettles error and Durham followed with a run-scoring double to center, scoring pinch runner Dennis Martinez and knocking out McCullers. Moreland greeted reliever Bob Stoddard with a run-scoring double to score Durham and Ron Cey’s single scored Moreland.

San Diego knocked out Lynch in the eighth and scored four runs. Pinch hitter Dane Iorg led off with an infield single, went to second on Tim Flannery’s single and scored on Tony Gwynn’s single to center. DiPino relieved and two outs later, pinch hitter Jerry Royster added a single and pinch-hitter Bruce Bochy followed with a two-run single.
