The Houston Astros keep hitting new highs in their run at the National League West title.

Mike Scott struck out a career-high 13 batters and Kevin Bass went 5 for 5 as the Astros pounded the Philadelphia Phillies, 9-3, Thursday night at Philadelphia for their seventh straight victory.

“That was a lot of fun,” Bass said. “It will be something to remember. I’ve never been 5 for 5 before.”

Scott (10-6) improved his major league-leading strikeout total to 187. He allowed five hits and walked four in seven innings.

“Mike Scott can make his fastball do a lot of things,” Phillie slugger Mike Schmidt said. “He doesn’t fool the hitter, but the ball’s just not there when you swing at it.”

The Astros made it easy for Scott by scoring eight runs in the third inning against Shane Rawley (11-7).

Alan Ashby opened the inning with a home run, his fourth of the year and first since April 22. Phil Garner and Dickie Thon hit two-run doubles in the inning, and Bass had a two-run single.

The victory gave the Astros a 3 1/2-game lead over second-place San Francisco, which was idle.

Cincinnati 10-5, Montreal 2-6--Tim Raines led off the 14th inning with a single and scored on Mitch Webster’s double to give the Expos the victory over the Reds in the scheduled game at Cincinnati.

In the completion of a July 13 game that was suspended by rain at Montreal, Dave Parker hit a grand-slam home run and Eric Davis added a three-run homer for the Reds. Cincinnati had held a 3-2 lead in the sixth inning when the game was halted in Montreal. It was finished in Cincinnati because the teams will not play each other in Montreal again during the 1986 regular season.
