Cox TV Cables Damaged by Fire

A Cox Cable TV official said Friday the Cowles Mountain fire that burned more than 400 acres Thursday caused $5,000 to $10,000 damage to the company’s communications cables.
Bob McRann, vice president and general manager, said the fire burned cables leading to mountaintop antennas and knocked out cable service to 271,000 customers between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Thursday. Non-cable reception was blocked for 30,000 customers at the base of Cowles Mountain in San Carlos.
“In the last 15 years there have probably been somewhere in the neighborhood of 30 fires on Cowles Mountain, and this is the first time our cables have been threatened,” McRann said. “The fire didn’t get anywhere near the (antenna) facility.”
