Smyth and Hill Widen Their Lead in Pacific 1,000 Race
Randy Smyth and Jim Hill widened their advantage in the Pacific 1,000 catamaran race Tuesday by winning the seventh leg by almost an hour over their seven rivals.
Smyth of Huntington Beach and Hill of San Francisco lead the field by 2 hours, 31 minutes and 19 seconds.
They took advantage of sailing conditions Tuesday by heading offshore when the wind diminished. This enabled them to sail in stronger winds while the rest of the field, hugging the coast, raced in lighter wind conditions.
Roy Seaman of Malibu, and Greg Richardson of Myrtle Beach, S.C., held onto second place overall by finishing fourth Tuesday. Larry Harteck, Santa Barbara, and Eric Brinton, San Diego, and third overall after finishing second in the seventh leg.
Finishing third in the seventh leg Tuesday was David Keller and Jack Edgehill, both of Mammoth Lakes, Calif. They are sixth with four legs left to sail.
The 1,000-mile race continues through Sunday. The eight boats will sail Wednesday from Redondo Beach to Oxnard.
