Orange County Roundup : Heavyweight Bout Set for Irvine

Monte Masters of Oklahoma will meet Nick DeLong of Long Beach in a 10-round heavyweight fight in one of the bouts on the Aug. 18 boxing card at the Irvine Marriott.

Masters, who lives in Saugus, has a 29-2 record with 22 knockouts, whereas DeLong, a former lineman at San Jose State, is 8-2.

Keith Brigman, an adaptive physical education teacher at Mitchell School in Santa Ana, received the John West Memorial Award at the closing ceremonies of the California Special Olympics at UCLA June 30.

The 20 coaches and regional directors chose Brigman as the event’s outstanding volunteer or coach. The award was established in the memory of Special Olympics founder John West, who died last year.

Brigman, who has taught at Mitchell School for five years, was runner-up last year for the coach/volunteer of the year award at the National Special Olympics. He was named the Orange County Special Olympics Coach of the Year for 1983-84.

The “Hoop Busters” basketball camp will be from Aug. 11-15 at Fullerton High School.

Instructors for the camp, which is for boys and girls 4-9, will be Troy Coach Ed Graham and Fullerton Coach Randy Forgette. Offense will be stressed. One hour of instruction will be followed by two games per day.

El Modena High School volleyball and softball star Laurie McRae has accepted a scholarship to play both sports at St. Mary’s College in Moraga, Calif.

In softball, McRae batted .371 last year and was a Times’ All-County selection in addition to being named the Most Valuable Player in the Century League.

Stacey Hisaka, who will be a sophomore at Fountain Valley High School this fall, was one of 15 players named to the All-American team at the AAU Junior Olympic basketball championships at Roanoke, Va., last week.

Hisaka played for the Southern Pacific AAU team based in Long Beach, which finished seventh in the 34-team tournament. She played varsity basketball for Fountain Valley last season as a freshman.

Teams are invited to sign up for Southern California Over-The-Line Softball’s fourth World Championship Grass Tournament to be played at Aug. 9 Cerritos Park. Entry fee is $24 per team.

Class C and D teams can enter the second 2-Pitch Slo-Pitch Softball Tournament, which will be played Aug. 10 at Tewinkle Park in Costa Mesa. Entry fee is $140 per team and all teams are guaranteed of playing at least four games.

The five best Colt baseball teams in the West will compete in a zone tournament Aug. 5-10 at Ocean View High School in Huntington Beach.

The teams of players 16 and under will represent a zone including Arizona, California, Oregon, Washington, Utah, Nevada, Wyoming, New Mexico and Colorado.

The winner of the tournament will advance to the World Series in Lafayatte, Ind., Aug. 12-20. Admission to the tournament in Huntington Beach is $2. Proceeds will benefit Colt baseball.

The American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO) is offering a clinic at Crown Valley Community Park in Laguna Niguel for AYSO players 6 to 16. The clinic, taught by Ricco Gnaulti and a staff of professional players, will cover all fundamental skills and techniques.
