Virginia Slims of San Diego : Kuhlman Wins to Move Into Semifinals Saturday
Caroline Kuhlman, the gold medalist in the Goodwill Games, moved into the semifinals of the $75,000 Virginia Slims of San Diego women’s tennis tournament Thursday with a 6-3, 2-6, 6-3 quarterfinal victory over Elna Reinach at the San Diego Hilton Beach & Tennis Resort.
The unseeded Kuhlman, who was a star at USC, will meet in Saturday’s semifinals the winner of today’s match between Melissa Gurney and fifth-seeded Betsy Nagelsen. Reinach upset top-seeded Kathy Jordan Wednesday.
In another quarterfinal match Thursday, second-seeded Stephanie Rehe defeated Debbie Spence, 6-3, 6-1. Rehe will play the winner of today’s other quarterfinal between fourth-seeded Kate Gompert and Dinky Van Rensburg.
In the doubles quarterfinals Thursday, Nagelsen and Anne White defeated Caryn Copeland and Pam Whytcross, 6-4, 6-3, and Lori McNeil and Katherine Suire defeated Van Rensburg and Masako Yanagi, 6-1, 6-2.
Today’s schedule (Stadium Court, play begins at 4 p.m.): Cammie MacGregor-Cynthia MacGregor vs. Beth Herr-Alycia Moulton; Dinky Van Rensburg vs. No. 4 Kate Gompert; Melissa Gurney vs. No. 5 Betsy Nagelson; Elise Burgin-Rosalyn Fairbank vs. Lea Antonopolis-Claudia Monterio.
