Mrs. Yvonne Murray says her son, Walter, doesn’t suffer from greed.

Walter Murray, who failed to sign his first pro football contract with the NFL’s Washington Redskins, is upset over an option clause, said his mother.

“To Walter, striking the option clause from the contract would give him more incentive to do well,” she said in a telephone interview with the Honolulu Star-Bulletin.

“He’s telling them, ‘If I don’t make Rookie of the Year my first year, or if I don’t make the Pro Bowl in a couple of years, you can cut me. The burden of proof is on me,’ ” the newspaper quoted Mrs. Murray as saying.

On Tuesday, the Redskins made Murray a take-it-or-leave it offer of three years at a total of just under $700,000 with an option to sign him for a fourth year at a 10 percent raise, the Honolulu newspaper said in its Thursday editions.

Murray’s agent, Frank Yip, told the newspaper, “I think it’s up to them (the Redskins) to initiate something now, buecase they are the ones dealing the cards.”
