The City Council has applied for a $6-million federal Urban Development Action Grant to assist in the development of a business and industrial park at the former General Motors assembly plant.
The money will be used for off-site improvement and infrastructure, including water lines and lighting facilities, said Andrew Pasmant, director of community development.
The grant will be award on a competitive basis and the city does not expect to hear from the federal government until around October, Pasmant said.
An $80-million retail and industrial complex is planned for the 90-acre site. Construction is expected to begin early next year.
