Long Beach : Rail Shipments Opposed
The City Council has strongly recommended that the Harbor Commission block a shipping terminal’s plan to build a dockside rail yard and run up to five trains a week through West Side and North Long Beach neighborhoods.
In a sharp warning, the council, which appoints harbor commissioners and approves Harbor Department budgets, said in a letter to the commission: “Please be aware that the City Council is extremely concerned about the proposal . . . and will take all steps necessary to prevent its implementation.”
A public hearing on the proposal by International Transportation Service Inc., which handles cargo for about 15 shipping lines, had been set for Monday but is now tentatively scheduled for Sept. 8.
Under the proposal, ITS would ship double-stacked steel containers on mile-long trains at about 2 a.m. through Long Beach on their way to the Midwest and East.
