Former Dodger pitcher Steve Howe, who has been with the Class A San Jose Bees this season, was told that a urinalysis July 14 tested positive for drug use, according to a published report.
John Lence, Howe’s attorney, and John Johnson, president of the National Assn. of Professional Baseball Leagues, both said that they had been informed of the positive result, the San Jose Mercury News reported.
The test was supervised by representatives of Baseball Commissioner Peter Ueberroth.
Johnson, whose organization governs minor league baseball, said he expected to put Howe on the ineligible list as soon as he receives a written report from Ueberroth.
Lence said that he and Howe had asked for specific results of the urinalysis--not just a statement that it was positive--and that they weren’t satisfied with the reliability of the commissioner’s report.
The positive finding from the commissioner’s test means that two out of three tests that Howe took July 14 were positive.
