Neurosurgeon Milton Avol, who faces a jail term for failing to correct about 40 violations at three of his slum apartment buildings in downtown Los Angeles, has sold two of the properties for $2.2 million.

The new owners of the buildings at 1821 and 1839 S. Main St. are Robert and Sook Hee Pak, who also own property in the mid-Wilshire area, Deputy City Atty. Stephanie Sautner said.

Sautner, who heads the city attorney’s housing enforcement unit, was unable to confirm the sale price, but other sources who asked not to be named said the price remained the same as it was when escrow opened.

“The properties were worth considerably more,” said Dale Alberstone, who represents Avol in civil matters. “The new owners think they can improve the quality of the tenants and by doing that the quality of the buildings will dramatically increase.”

The Paks’ attorney, Herbert Davis, declined comment.

Sautner said the sale will have no effect on Avol’s sentence. Last month he was ordered to serve nine months in County Jail for violating terms of his 1983 probation, but the sentence was stayed pending an appeal.
