McEnroe, Playing Both Singles and Doubles Again, Teams Up With Fleming to Win Title
John McEnroe and Peter Fleming, four-time Wimbledon doubles champions, Monday defeated second-seeded Paul Annacone and Christo Van Rensburg, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, to win the doubles title at the Volvo International.
McEnroe and Fleming were unseeded because of McEnroe’s absence from the tour since January and his lack of doubles competition for nearly a year.
The doubles competition was delayed because of rain Thursday and Friday. The winners split $13,500, the losers $6,750.
McEnroe and Fleming eliminated top-seeded Ken Flach and Robert Seguso, the world’s No. 1-ranked doubles team and the U.S. Open champions, 6-4, 6-2, in the quarterfinals.
