Share

City officials will dedicate a new five-acre park today in honor of Harriett M. Wieder, Huntington Beach’s former mayor and a current member of the county Board of Supervisors.

Wieder served as the city’s mayor in 1976 and 1977 during her four-year term on the City Council.

The ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. at the park, near the corner of Lynn and Pearce streets.

Named Harriett M. Wieder Park, the area contains four acres of open space, basketball and volleyball courts, play equipment and a children’s sand area.

Jim Engle, a spokesman for the Parks and Recreation Department, said naming the park after Wieder is in keeping with city tradition.

“We name our parks after past mayors and council members,” he said. “That’s the way the city honors its past politicians.”
