Local News in Brief : Leap Off Freight Train Causes Loss of a Leg
A 20-year-old man was seriously injured early Thursday, necessitating the amputation of part of his left leg after he apparently fell under a freight train in Chatsworth, police said.
The man, Kevin Fox of Chatsworth, was in serious but stable condition at Northridge Hospital Medical Center, Los Angeles Police Lt. John Aggas said.
Fox and a friend had jumped aboard a westbound Southern Pacific freight as it passed through Chatsworth, police and a spokesman for Southern Pacific said. The 40-car train had slowed on a siding to let two eastbound trains pass and was re-entering the main track when someone on the second eastbound train reported seeing a body on the tracks, Southern Pacific spokesman John Tierney said.
The westbound train stopped, and Southern Pacific employees found Fox by the tracks, Tierney said.
The accident occurred as Fox and his friend tried to jump from the train, Aggas said.
Paramedics who responded to the accident between Lassen and Devonshire streets also treated Fox’s companion, but the man left before police could question him, Aggas said.
