Catalina Ferry Strike Drags On as Talks Fizzle

Share

Talks between the striking Inland Boatman’s Union and Catalina Cruises Co. resumed briefly Friday in Long Beach but broke off at day’s end.

A company spokesman said there was no progress toward settling the labor dispute between crewmen and officers and the firm that operates the principal ferryboat service between the mainland and Santa Catalina Island.

The strike began Aug. 1, when 100 union members rejected the company’s latest offer of a 15% cut in wages. The union had agreed accept to a wage freeze.

A company spokesman said supervisorial personnel and temporary replacement employees are carrying about 80% of the normal number of passengers between San Pedro and Long Beach and the island.

The spokesman said no new talks were scheduled. The union could not be reached for comment.
