Fire Damages Hotel: A fire that started in a commercial dryer caused $10,000 in damage to the Newport Beach Marriott Hotel, fire officials said. The fire began about 5:30 p.m. Saturday in a dryer that contained kitchen rags and towels. Automatic sprinkler heads kept the fire from spreading, and firefighters were able to extinguish the flames within 15 minutes, Newport Beach Fire Department dispatcher Kathy McGlinchey said. The hotel did not have to be evacuated, and the only injury occurred when a hotel employee cut his hand while removing a fire extinguisher from a wall, McGlinchey said.
