Volunteer pilots continued their search over a 400-mile area for a plane that they believe crash-landed in the Mojave Desert or the Tehachapi Mountains on Friday afternoon. The rescue attempt began after an air controller at Edwards Air Force Base picked up a distress call Friday afternoon, said 2nd Lt. Juanita Phelps of the Civil Air Patrol. By radio, the pilot said his left engine had failed and that he was falling fast. “We’re hoping someone calls in and says they’ve got a plane missing,” Phelps said.
