A timber-fed fire scorched 400 acres of Cuyamaca Rancho State Park as 396 firefighters battled to gain control of the blaze Wednesday, forestry officials said.

Air tankers, helicopters, bulldozers and ground crews fought the Japacha Peak fire. The terrain is steep and it is a heavy timber area, which adds fuel to the fire, a California Forestry Department spokesman said. Accessibility is also a problem because there is only one major road, California 79, into the area.

There is a state campground in the area, but no one was evacuated, a sheriff’s spokesman said.

The fire started about 1 p.m., and the cause is under investigation.
