Hinault Wins Overall Race; LeMond 2nd

Ron Kiefel, who rides for 7-Eleven, won the final stage of the Coors International bicycle race Sunday, but Bernard Hinault of France won the race and teammate Greg LeMond of Reno was second.

Kiefel, 26, from Wheat Ridge, Colo., broke away with about 17 miles to go in the 37-lap, 61-mile race.

Hinault and LeMond, his Red Zinger teammate, stayed in the lead of the pack, with neither able to break away.

Australian Phil Anderson of the Levi’s team finished third overall.

Ron Knickman of the Levi’s team finished second in the stage, about 1:21 behind Kiefel, who had an unofficial time of 2 hours 20 minutes 19 seconds. Adrie Van Der Poel of the Holland pro team was third, about 1:37 behind Kiefel.

Earlier Sunday, Jeannie Longo of the Red Zinger team won the women’s overall title after a second-place finish in the final stage, the 34-mile North Boulder Park circuit race.

Susan Ehlers of the Centurion team won the stage in 1 hour 23 minutes 24 seconds, a time that pushed her from fourth overall into the runner-up position.

Longo finished the final women’s stage at 1:24:54, and third-place finisher Ute Enzenhauer of West Germany had a time of 1:24:59.

Ehlers, of Richardson, Tex., finished 1:37 behind Longo. Ehlers knocked Inga Benedict of the 7-Eleven team into third place overall, 1:58 behind the leader.

Maria Canins of the Weight Watchers team wound up fourth overall, 3:06 behind Longo. She was fifth Sunday, at 1:24:59.

The 27-year-old Longo and the 31-year-old Hinault, both of France, also won last year’s race.

In all, the men raced about 1,100 miles in 14 days, in California, Nevada and Colorado. The women joined the men in Colorado, racing about 390 miles in nine days.
