Among other NFL players given their release was Herman Edwards, a fixture at cornerback for the Philadelphia Eagles for a decade.

Edwards played in 135 consecutive games and needed just two more interceptions to set a team record.

The top rookie waived was 6-5, 290-pound tackle Doug Williams, the New York Jets’ second-round draft pick who had been projected as a first-round pick by many.

Also cut was Charles Alexander, a starter at running back for most of his seven seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Others players let go were wide receiver Brian Baschnagel of the Chicago Bears, punter Dave Finzer of the Seattle Seahawks, kick returner-wide receiver Tommy Vigorito of the Miami Dolphins and punter Chris Norman of the Denver Broncos.

NFL teams must be down to 50 players, excluding exemptions, by 1 p.m. PDT today. They will trim to the season limit of 45 next week.
