An aftershock of the July 8 earthquake shook the desert for the second straight day Friday, prompting dozens of calls to authorities but causing no reports of injury or damage.

“It just shook everything,” Police Sgt. Gary Jeandron said. “It hit pretty hard at first and then dwindled down.”

The 12:46 a.m. temblor measured 4.0 on the Richter scale and was centered 14 miles north of Palm Springs in Yucca Valley, said Dennis Meredith, a spokesman for the Caltech seismology laboratory.

Police received about 30 telephone calls and there was one call to the San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department Morongo Valley substation, a dispatcher said.

A 3.3-magnitude aftershock shook the Palm Springs area Thursday. There were no reports of damage.

The July temblor that measured 5.9 on the Richter scale injured 29 people, damaged or destroyed 51 homes, caused major power outages and shut down several roads due to rock slides.
