NEW YORK — Chris Evert Lloyd and West Germany’s Boris Becker breezed to easy victories Friday night after Jimmy Connors, looking his age, managed to beat 19-year-old Claudio Pistolesi of Italy in the U.S. Open Tennis Championships.
All three advanced to the third round.
Lloyd took only 35 minutes to romp past Czechoslovakia’s Regina Marsikova, 6-0, 6-0. The loser won only 14 points.
“Regina had an awful night; she couldn’t do anything right,” Lloyd said. “I felt sorry for her because we all go through nights like that.”
Becker, the reigning Wimbledon champion, routed Cassio Motta of Brazil, 6-3, 6-0, 6-2.
Connors, who will turn 34 before this two-week tournament ends, ousted Pistolesi, 7-6, 6-4, 7-5, and was joined by Tom Gullikson, the oldest man in the tournament.
Gullikson upset 10th-seeded Andres Gomez of Ecuador, 3-6, 6-7, 7-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Gullikson, who will turn 35 Sept. 8, gained entry into the tournament by getting a wild card at “the 11th hour,” he said.
“I think they called me an hour or two before the draw. (Peter) Fleming refused a wild card because he was going to concentrate on the doubles. I was prepared to fly up on a Thursday night to try and qualify.”
