Baseball Roundup : Smith, Expos Defeat Giants, 4-2

Bryn Smith allowed only three hits in eight innings, and Tom Foley hit his first home run of the season to lead the Montreal Expos to a 4-2 victory over the San Francisco Giants at Montreal.

Smith (10-8) struck out seven and walked one before allowing consecutive home runs in the ninth and giving way to Jeff Reardon, who earned his 29th save.

Candy Maldonado led off the ninth with his 13th home run of the season, and Chili Davis followed with his 10th.

Giant starter Mike LaCoss continued his string of poor performances. LaCoss (9-11) gave up four runs on five hits in six innings and picked up his eighth straight loss. His last victory was July 12 over the Pirates.

Kansas City 1, Chicago 0--Mark Gubicza and Steve Farr combined on a three-hitter, and Lonnie Smith singled home an unearned run in the eighth inning to give the Royals a split in the four-game series at Kansas City.

Farr (8-3) got the win; reliever Bill Dawley (0-6) took the loss.

Cleveland 15, Milwaukee 4--Joe Carter hit a grand slam, and Cory Snyder had two three-run home runs for the Indians at Milwaukee.
