Stanton : Prank Ends Badly With Man Being Shot in Head

A prank turned serious early Saturday, ending with one man shot in the head and lying in a hospital in critical condition, according to police.

Sgt. Steven Kelch said two friends--Robert Charles Fiebrantz, 28, of Garden Grove and Bradley Scott Tunby, 31, of Anaheim--were riding with a friend along Beach Boulevard at 3:30 a.m. when they saw a man driving a small truck pick up a woman they thought was a prostitute.

The two friends decided to “have some fun,” Kelch said.

He said the two men followed the truck to a parking lot in the 12100 block of Beach Boulevard, pulled alongside the truck and one said, “We’re the police. You shouldn’t be doing this.”

Kelch said the man in the truck pulled a handgun and fired one shot, hitting Fiebrantz in the back of the head.

Tunby rushed Fiebrantz to Humana Hospital in West Anaheim, where he was reported in critical condition.

The woman, who was not identified, flagged a police car and described the truck. A man police identified as James Lee Burgess, 46, of Huntington Beach was arrested a short time later, Kelch said. Police said they recovered a .22-caliber pistol from Burgess’ truck.

Burgess was booked into County Jail on suspicion of attempted murder, and bail was set at $250,000, police said.
