South Roundup : Virginia a Winner in Opener

Don Majkowski threw for 271 yards and two touchdowns, and Maurizio Manca kicked three field goals at Charlottesville, Va., Saturday to help Virginia open its season with a 30-20 victory over South Carolina.

The Gamecocks, a 34-14 loser to Miami last week, dropped to 0-2.

Majkowski completed 14 of 26 passes as the Cavaliers accumulated 539 yards in total offense.

But it was a goal-line stand that was the key play of the game for Virginia.

After pulling within 27-20 on a four-yard touchdown run by Raynard Brown early in the third period, the Gamecocks drove deep into Virginia territory. But, on fourth-and-goal from the one, Harold Green was stopped inches short by linebackers Jeff Lageman and Delano Tyler.

Two possessions later, Virginia put the game out of reach with a 25-yard field goal by Manca. Manca also made kicks of 19 and 22 yards on Virginia’s first two possessions.

North Carolina 45, The Citadel 14--At Chapel Hill, N.C., reserve tailback Derrick Fenner rushed for a career-high 216 yards and two scores, and starter William Humes added two other touchdowns for the Tar Heels (1-0).

Fenner, who carried 23 times, had touchdown runs of 15 and 9 yards. Humes, who rushed 14 times for 72 yards, scored on runs of 11 and 5 yards.

North Carolina gained 613 yards in total offense--401 rushing--to The Citadel’s 235, including 33 yards rushing in 31 carries.

Kip Allen completed 20 of 36 passes for 192 yards and both Citadel touchdowns--a 2-yarder to Dayle Rust and a 16-yarder to Warren McGrier.

Jonathan Hall and Mark Maye each threw for one touchdown for North Carolina. Hall, the starter, completed 9 of 17 passes for 135 yards. Maye completed all four of his passes in limited action.

N. Carolina St. 38, E. Carolina 10--Flanker Nasrallah Worthen scored two touchdowns, and quarterback Erik Kramer added another on a 12-yard run as the Wolfpack won before a North Carolina record crowd of 58,650 at Raleigh, N.C.

The attendance broke the mark of 58,300 set at N.C. State last year against East Carolina, and the victory marked the debut of North Carolina State Coach Dick Sheridan.

William & Mary 42, Colgate 21--Kenny Lambiotte, who transferred from Virginia’s basketball program to play quarterback for William & Mary, passed for 303 yards and three touchdowns in a Division I-AA game at Williamsburg, Va.

Lambiotte, who completed 24 of 34 passes, rallied the Indians (1-0) from a 14-0 deficit with touchdown passes of 18 yards to Reggie Hodnett, 13 yards to Michael Clemons and 7 yards to Dave Pisano. Clemons, who added 155 yards rushing, also scored on a seven-yard run.

Kenny Gamble carried 30 times for a career-high 225 yards and scored twice for Colgate (0-1).

Richmond 38, New Hampshire 12--At Richmond, Va., Bob Bleier passed for 289 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Spiders in a Yankee Conference season opener for both teams.

Bleier, who completed 20 of 32 attempts, hit tailback Greg Grooms on passes of 21 and 1 yards in the second quarter and found Brian Shields on a 17-yard touchdown strike in the third quarter as the Spiders dominated the game from the second quarter on.

Cincinnati 24, Virginia Tech 20--Dan McCoin, who passed for 350 yards, tossed a seven-yard touchdown pass to Scott Tackett with 14 seconds remaining to lift the Bearcats to victory at Blacksburg, Va.

Cincinnati drove 73 yards in 9 plays for the winning touchdown.

Wake Forest 21, Appalachian St. 13--Sophomore quarterback Mike Elkins completed 21 of 32 passes for 264 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Demon Deacons to victory at Winston-Salem, N.C.

S. Mississippi 28, NE Louisiana 19--Vincent Alexander gained 149 yards and scored a touchdown at Hattiesburg, Miss., to lead the Golden Eagles to a season-opening victory over the Indians.
