National League Roundup : Giants Held to One Hit but Beat Youmans, 1-0

Montreal Expos’ pitcher Floyd Youmans gave up only one hit in eight innings Sunday to the San Francisco Giants.

But the Giants made the most of their only hit and beat Youmans and the Expos, 1-0, in Montreal. Giants’ pitcher Mike Krukow pitched a two-hitter.

“It’s frustrating,” said Youmans, who has been given only five runs by Montreal hitters in his last five losses. “I should have 15 or 16 wins by now.”

Youmans (12-10) struck out 10. Tim Burke pitched a hitless ninth inning for Montreal.

The Giants scored the game’s only run in the first when Rob Thompson was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on Mike Aldrete’s double.

Krukow (15-9) gave up a one-out single by Randy Hunt in the second inning, then retired 19 in a row before Wallace Johnson singled with two out in the eighth.

Krukow had runners at first and third with one out in the ninth but got out of it by getting Tim Wallach on a popup and Luis Rivera on strikes.

New York 7-6, San Diego 1-5-- The Mets swept a doubleheader from the Padres in New York to stretch their winning streak to four straight.

New York has won 10 of its last 12 games and has a 21-game lead over Philadelphia in the N.L. East.

Dwight Gooden (14-5) pitched a four-hitter to win the opener. Gooden struck out five and walked two in getting his fourth victory in his last five decisions.

Manager Davey Johnson said Gooden will open for the Mets in the playoffs.

Dane Iorg spoiled Gooden’s shutout with a pinch home run.

In the nightcap, Ed Hearn’s bases-loaded walk in the sixth inning broke a 4-4 tie.

Steve Garvey missed the doubleheader because of swelling in his right knee, breaking his streak of 305 consecutive games. Garvey last missed a game Sept. 25, 1984, playing the final eight games of that season, all of the Padres’ games last year and the first 135 this season.

Houston 6, St. Louis 3--Kevin Bass had two hits and scored the winning run, and Davey Lopes had a two-run pinch single as the Astros rallied to beat the Cardinals in Houston, increasing their lead in the West to eight games over Cincinnati.

Phil Garner homered and Dickie Thon went 3 for 4 for the Astros.

Jeff Calhoun (1-0) pitched the sixth inning in relief of starter Danny Darwin, striking out two and walking one. Dave Smith pitched the ninth inning and recorded his 29th save.

Chicago 11, Cincinnati 3--The Cubs had 19 hits, three each by Ryne Sandberg and Shawon Dunston, to end their seven-game losing streak at Cincinnati.

Reds’ starter Bill Gullickson (13-9), who won his previous five starts, took his worst drubbing of the season. He allowed six runs and eight hits in 1 innings--his shortest stint of the year. Cincinnati used six pitchers overall including catcher Sal Butera, who worked a scoreless ninth.

Greg Maddux (1-1) earned his first major league victory in his first start.

Dave Parker and Bo Diaz had seven of the Reds 11 hits. Parker went 3 for 3 and Diaz was 4 for 4 with a solo homer.

Pittsburgh 3, Atlanta 1--Bob Kipper combined with Barry Jones on a five-hitter at Atlanta as the Pirates beat the Braves.

Kipper (4-7) gave up four hits over 7 innings to earn the victory. The left-hander struck out five and walked one. Jones worked the final 1 innings to register his third save.
