Steve Cram of Britain came up short in a bid to break his world record in the mile, but he still scored an impressive victory in 3 minutes 49.49 seconds at the McVitie International Challenge track meet in London.
Cram’s world record is 3:46.32.
Edwin Moses, unbeaten in nine years, won his 104th consecutive 400-meter hurdles final. Moses was timed in 48.73 seconds.
In the women’s 100-meter hurdles, Yordanka Donkova, the Bulgarian world record-holder, was upset by countrywoman Ginka Zagortcheva, who was timed in 12.51. Donkova’s time was 12.55.
Americans finished 1-2 in the 400 meters, with Andre Phillips, normally a hurdler, edging Darrell Robinson. Both were timed in 45 seconds flat.
Britain’s Sebastian Coe won the 800 meters in 1:44.28, and Valerie Brisco-Hooks won the women’s 100 meters in 11.12.
