Two Bettors at L.A. County Fair Each Win $79,379 in the Pick Six
Two anonymous fans had plenty to celebrate Sunday at the Los Angeles County Fair at Pomona when they made off with record Pick Six returns of $79,379.40 each.
The two patrons were the only ones among 19,610 with the perfect combination of 3-4-2-2-4-6 for the winners of the fifth through 10th races.
The record payoffs beat the previous Pick Six high of $78,019 set last Sept. 19th.
Lured by a two-day carryover of $84,636, a record $188,745 was wagered in the Pick Six pool on Sunday. That topped the previous mark of $174,853, also set last year. There were 86 tickets with five winners. Each consolation payoff was worth $862.20.
Meanwhile, Our Best Tell held off the late bid of Le L’Argent to capture the $50,090 E.B. Johnston Stakes for a second straight year.
Responding to jockey Corey Black’s strong stretch urging, Our Best Tell hit the wire a neck ahead in the stakes-record time of 1:42 3/5 for the 1 1/16 miles. That shaved 2 2/5 seconds off her previous stakes standard set in the 1985 Johnston Stakes.
Sent off the second choice, Our Best Tell paid $5.40 to win.
