Tennis Roundup : Second-Seeded Nystrom Is Ousted by Fellow Swede

Henrik Sundstrom upset second-seeded Joakim Nystrom, 6-3, 6-4, in an all-Swedish third-round match Thursday in the $250,000 West German Open championship at Hamburg.

Nystrom’s loss followed the elimination Wednesday of top-seeded Boris Becker by Mel Purcell.

Purcell continued his victorious march Thursday, reaching the quarterfinals with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Horacio de la Pena of Argentina.

Defending champion Miloslav Mecir of Czechoslovakia, seeded third, struggled before downing Franco Devin of Argentina, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.

Fourth-seeded Henri Leconte of France defeated Milan Srejber of Czechoslovakia, 6-4, 6-3, while Jakob Hlasek of Switzerland swept past Michael Westphal, the last West German in the field, 6-2, 6-2.

Westphal had upset Andres Gomez of Ecuador, ranked 10th in the world, in a second-round match Wednesday.

In other third-round matches, Emilio Sanchez of Spain routed countryman Sergio Casal, 6-2, 6-1; Thomas Muster of Austria defeated 17-year-old Guillermo Perez-Roldan of Argentina, 6-3, 6-1, and Kent Carlsson of Sweden downed Martin Jaite of Argentina, 7-5, 7-5.

Unseeded Lori McNeil won the final eight games to upset defending champion Stephanie Rehe, 4-6, 6-4, 6-0, in the second round of a $125,000 women’s tournament at Largo, Fla. Rehe was seeded third.

Later, unseeded Marianne Werdel of Bakersfield knocked off fourth-seeded Carling Bassett of Canada, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6.

Earlier, sixth-seeded Terry Phelps defeated U.S. Open junior champion Elly Hakami, 6-2, 4-6, 6-0.
