Oh, Brother! Tulane Victory Is Unhappy One

For 60 minutes of football, Tulane Coach Mack Brown tried to ignore the fact that his brother, Watson, was the coach on the other sideline.

When he finally allowed himself to remember, he wept.

“Obviously, for Mack Brown it was a bittersweet victory,” he said after Tulane defeated Vanderbilt, 35-17, Saturday night.

“The first thing I felt when the game was over was tears because my best friend was across the field.

“I was never conscious (of Watson) until it was 35-17 late in the ballgame. I think that’s the first time I got out of the coaching, and that’s when I felt down and sad.”

Backup quarterback Jerome McIntosh scored the tiebreaking touchdown on a 4-yard run in the second period.

Tulane improved to 1-1, while Vanderbilt slipped to 0-3.
